Namecheap is a domain registrar. Once you connect it, your assistants can check whether a name is free, list the domains you own, register a new one, and point a domain at your site. Registering a domain and every DNS change stop at your Approve.

Before you start#

Namecheap is stricter than other registrars about who may connect:

  • A fixed internet address. Namecheap only answers requests from addresses you add to its allow list, and only IPv4 addresses. That suits the StellarFirm desktop app on a connection whose address does not change, such as an office line. It does not suit a laptop that moves between networks.
  • An account Namecheap opens access for. Namecheap turns on access only for accounts that meet its own conditions, such as holding a number of domains or having funds in the account. Check Namecheap's help pages for the current conditions.

If either one rules Namecheap out for you, Porkbun, Name.com, and Gandi do the same job without an allow list.

Which assistants use it#

When your company has a Product owner, it is the one that registers domains. Changing DNS records and nameservers is always the Coder's job.

Setup (when it opens)#

  1. In Namecheap, open your profile, then Tools, and turn on access for developer tools. Namecheap shows an access key.
  2. Add the internet address the assistants connect from to Namecheap's allow list. Use the IPv4 address, not an IPv6 one.
  3. Add funds to your Namecheap account. Namecheap takes what it charges for a registration from them.
  4. Open Integrations in StellarFirm and pick Namecheap.
  5. Enter your Namecheap username, the access key, and the same IPv4 address you allowed. Press Connect.
  6. Save your company's registrant contact in Settings, Auto-approve. It is who the domain is registered to.

Permissions#

  • Checking names and listing your domains happen on their own.
  • Registering a domain always waits for your Approve. The request shows what Namecheap charges now and for each renewal year, and names the registrant contact that will be used. A name check only says whether a name is free.
  • Setting DNS records or nameservers always waits for your Approve, and the request lists exactly what will change.
  • No Auto-approve choice in Settings skips these. See approvals.

Good to know#

  • If your internet address changes, Namecheap refuses every request until you add the new address to its allow list and in Integrations.
  • Just before it registers, the assistant asks Namecheap again. If the name was taken, or Namecheap now charges more than you approved, nothing is registered and the assistant tells you why.
  • To use other registrant details for one domain, reply with them before you approve. The assistant posts a new request with those details.
  • To cut access, turn off developer access in Namecheap or remove the address from its allow list.

Prompts to try#

Product owner, check whether [name].com is free with Namecheap. Do not register it.
